Start the soup: melt 1 tbsp butter in a pot over medium heat and cook the diced onion 5 minutes. Add the garlic for 30 seconds.
Add the crushed tomatoes and broth, season with salt, pepper and a pinch of sugar, and simmer 15 minutes. Blend until smooth with an immersion blender and stir in the cream.
Meanwhile, heat the oven to 350°F. Slice the whole slab of rolls in half horizontally without separating them and set the bottom in a baking dish.
Layer the ham and Swiss on the bottom half and add the top. Melt the remaining 3 tbsp butter with the Dijon and poppy seeds and brush it over the rolls.
Cover with foil and bake 15 minutes, then uncover and bake 5 minutes until the tops are golden and the cheese melts.
Cut into sliders and serve with mugs of tomato soup for dunking.
